Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition (3 User Licence) (PC)

Having the need to source new software for new computer and upgrade others I searched the reviews on Amazon but was worried to see some not so very positive comments about the Home and Student edition. However need and positive past experience with MS Office products overcame concerns and I ordered it. The good news is I had nothing to worry about, it loaded perfectly and is running just fine. Powerpoint is there in its entirety.
One very happy customer and good value for money.

Photoshop Elements 6 (PC)

Photoshop Elements 6 (PC)

If you want to acheive fantastic results with your pictures, Photoshop Elements 6 is for you. At a fairly low price it has fantastic features for making banners, buttons, posters, collages and many more projects. It installed in no time and was easy to register. The only problem that I have is when going from my picture catalogue to the editor, it can take a little longer than expected, but it is still quite quick.

In two words - simply fantastic!

After using the free editions of AVG and later Avast!4.8(which both did a good job of keeping my PC virus-free), I was offered a trial of Internet Security 2009 through the Amazon Vine Program.
Installation took about 10 minutes and was fairly straightforward as the
program automatically installs to the Default settings, which are suitable
for most users. After installation the latest virus databases are also downloaded, after that the virus database quietly updates when needed.
There's an extensive user interface enabling advanced users to customise
their settings. The user interface has been the main difference I've found between this and free AV programs such as Avast! in that it offers more functionality.
It has kept my system well protected so far as it has a slightly higher detection rate than AVG or Avast!, and the only thing that stops me giving it 5/5 is that occasionally I've had page errors in Internet Explorer which I think are caused by the ad-blocker. I've tried changing settings but it still occurs occasionally.
Other than that I'd definitely recommend Kaspersky Internet Security as
a good means of keeping your system free from viruses and malware.

Norton Internet Security 2008 (3 User licence), Full Edition (PC)

I 'upgraded' to this from Norton Personal Firewall. Have now uninstalled Norton Internet Security as had trouble with pop-ups ever since installing it. The old Firewall does the job and no more ads! I understand Norton have discontinued the Ad blocking. Why??

Wouldn't recommend this priduct - waste of money.

Driving Test Success ALL Tests 2008/09 Edition (PC)

Driving Test Success ALL Tests 2008/09 Edition (PC)

This CD is great, and not just for those who are yet to take their test.
It is a great refresher for anyone who may have passed their test many years ago, or for those that have passed, but still feel they need to know their road signs and highway code better.

This CD would also be great for those that feel their driving ability may not be quite what it should due to aging or ill health.

The CD has the theory test,
Hazard perception test,
Road sign test.
practical test and safe driver test.
It also contains the latest official highway code,
also a video of the latest mock driving test,
and a printable theory test book.

I believe every driver, or future driver, can gain some knowledge or insight from this CD, and throughly recommend it.

Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition for Bundle Offers, 3-User Licence (Service Desk Edition) (PC)

Dear All,
A first-time negative reviwer, and a previous admirer of the Microsoft Office stable, I have to register disgust at this particular Microsoft offering. It is misleading, and if you want a comprehensive product, you are going to have to spend a lot more.

As backgound, I am a "silver" post-grad now involved in cardiology related voluntary work with the NHS. My wife is a seving Headteacher. At the turn of last year we decided to update our long sufferring systems, which were struggling to cope with Office XP professional (2003).

As a Sony fan, I bought myself an AR series large screen desktop replacement, together with the ultimate boy's toy -a full powered micro PC (Sony UX-1XN). My wife got a semi-pro CR series. The point is that the first came with Vista home premium operating systems and the others sport full Vista Business, so I thought it appropriate to upgrade to a three user vista compatable Office licence.

I have rated the product 3 stars. In fairness, if you are prepared to put in the learning effort, there are significant improvements in Word, Excel and Powerpoint.BUT:
1)No access to the relational database "Access", or any update to that.
2) Most importantly, the student version does not support or include any version of Outlook. Naively, I thought that they may have substituted Outlook by improving windows Calendar, Mail Manager, contacts etc. That is not the case. I am now dependent on my ISP providers mail manager , with the lack of appropriate security. I have also tried installing my licenced 2003 version, but either I am inept or it is being blocked. I have not been able to find multi-license for outlook, and when I last looked it will cost around £ 80 per computer to bring outlook on board -£240 on top of of your licence.

3)Finally, One Note is in essence a freebie (aka. a marketing experiment) included with the student version. I have played with this a little but conclude that for most users it is not sufficiently developed to be useful. However, as I mentioned, I bought a Sony UX1 - one ofthe world's smallest full-functioning solid state computers. As part of its on-board tricks, it has a touch-snsitive screen, which lets me review and comment(in handwriting - tranlsated to text) on word documents. Some of the concepts in one-note could be developed in that environment, but not for most current users.

Norton Internet Security 2008 Plus SystemWorks Basic Edition Bundle Pack, 1 User Edition (PC)

Norton Internet Security 2008 Plus SystemWorks Basic Edition Bundle Pack, 1 User Edition (PC)

The product is an absolute joke. And the Technical Support / Customer Service at Symantec is even worse.

1.) Upon Starting the PC I am greeted with multiple pop-ups - Virus Definitions Out of Date and Virus Scan Out of Date etc etc. On entering the software everything is ok.....
2.) The system seems to hang on the "one button check up" during the Norton Cleanup scan and then after 30 minutes will find files to clean up. Example found 763 then cleaned. Immediately ran again and found 1091, then cleaned (again). Immediately ran again and found 2111.
3.) Have used Symantec Chat on 4 occasions and each time they tell me that it is sorted. When I start the computer again, the problems start again.

On the 4th occasion i spent over 1 hour being passed from person to person, each as seemingly useless as the other.

I would never consider using this again even if backed into a corner and threatened with extreme torture.

Hope this helps....

PS. I run a very new and highly specced PC with Vista (which is also fraught with problems) (however Symantec do assure us that the software is fully compatible with VISTA....

Office 2008 for Mac, Home and Student Edition (Mac)

Office 2008 for Mac, Home and Student Edition (Mac)

This new version of Office has too many problems. In addition to the slow performance the lack of compatability with other versions (meaning settings have to be changed to save files in the old format) makes day to day operation a pain. Added to that network operation on classic Office files is very uncertain.
I have tried three service pack versions. The first one wouldn't open Excel XLS files through the network, then after the next service pack it did, after the next fix pack it didn't.
Files seem to randomly get saved into last used save folders when they have been opened from somewhere else. If you want basic Word processing and spreadsheet analysis with presentation save money and buy iWork. The learning curve will be shorter than the frustration trying to make Office 2008 work. And you can install on five computers.iWork '08 Family Pack

Acronis True Image 11 (PC)

Acronis True Image 11 (PC)

First the good news : Easy to install on XP and the interface seems user friendly. Now the not so good news : Despite running incremental backups every week for several months when I actually needed to use the product it did not restore all of the data and hung at 97% completion. Perhaps foolishly I tried again and was informed that the backup was corrupted. Gave up. Reinstalled the OS and system software the old fashioned way and am manually backing up data every week onto external HDD. On reflection I think this software gave me a false sense of security.
